- This paper presents the methodology for calibrating coupled Computational Fluid Dynamics and Discrete Element Method (CFD-DEM) simulations using mono-sized plastic pellets as the material. Calibrating of DEM simulations is well understood to be one of the most crucial steps to ensure the accuracy of the results. When calibrating cohesionless, free-flowing bulk materials for DEM, simple experiments such as various angle of repose tests are commonly used. When calibrating for CFD-DEM specifically, it is beneficial to include the fluid-particle interactions as well. Therefore, the applicability of using a single spout fluidised bed rig was investigated in its usefulness to determine the relevant calibration parameters. It allowed for calibrating using many different parameters such as the angle of repose, shear angle and height of the spout. This results in more accurate calibration for CFD-DEM and only requires a single simple test.
